The Memorize Mode

Introduction

The "Memorize" mode in Arutairu is designed to help users review a vocabulary list through an interactive interface known as the 'Revision' activity. This page provides a detailed explanation of the features and functionalities available in this mode.

Interface Overview

The 'Revision' activity interface is structured as follows, from top to bottom:

  1. Position Indicator: Displays the current word's position in the list (e.g., 12/38 indicates the 12th word out of 38).
  2. Card Display: A gray rectangle showing at first the word in Japanese.
  3. Pronunciation Button: Plays the pronunciation of the word.
  4. Translation: Shows the word's translation in the user's language.
  5. Navigation Buttons: "BACK" and "NEXT" buttons for navigating through the list.
    • Long-press "BACK" to return to the beginning of the list.
    • Long-press "NEXT" to skip to the end of the list.
    • When not in Hands-Free mode, pressing "NEXT" at the list's end closes the vocabulary list and returns to the main screen.

Pronunciation Feature

  • Romaji Display: Pressing the pronunciation button triggers a white overlay showing the Romaji (Latin alphabet version) of the Japanese word.
  • Hands-Free Mode Activation: Long-pressing the pronunciation button activates Hands-Free mode, making the pronunciation button disappear and replacing "NEXT" and "BACK" with a "STOP" button to interrupt the mode.

Hands-Free Mode

Hands-Free mode allows users to listen to vocabulary lists while performing other activities, enhancing motivation and convenience. This mode uses the device's Text-to-Speech engine, configured via the Android API. Voice settings can be adjusted in the device settings. During the first app launch, compatibility with the Text-to-Speech engine is checked, and users are notified if it's not installed.

Hands-Free Mode Behavior

  • Word Announcement: Each word is first announced once in the user's language, followed by two repetitions in Japanese.
  • Continuous Loop: The list cycles back to the beginning after reaching the end.
  • Navigation in Hands-Free Mode:
