This functionality was included by @keewis for the kerchunk reader in this PR https://github.com/zarr-developers/VirtualiZarr/pull/260/files but is not currently supported by the HDFVirtualbackend https://github.com/zarr-developers/VirtualiZarr/blob/main/virtualizarr/tests/test_readers/test_hdf/test_hdf.py#L25-L32.
