<h1>Background</h1>
<p>This page provides additional information on details used in
construction of the tidal creeks dashboard as well as summaries of
various aspects of analysis conducted to identify management tools
related to evaluating tidal creek condition. These links will be updates

the dashboard.</p>

<h3><a

target="_blank">Creek Length Adjustment</a></h3>
<p>This link details the assessment of creek length as a metric to
develop the Caution level criteria. This is an area of current research.
The original regression relationship was statistically significant and
was supported by other analysis suggesting that creek length was a
contributing factor explaining variation in nutrient concentrations in
these creeks. However, the relationships were somewhat weak. Over time,
stakeholders should continue to evaluate the utility of the creek length
adjustment relative to simply using the TN indicator threshold value of
1.1 mg/l annual geometric mean as a threshold for the Caution level.
Assessing these results over time and comparing the relative accuracy of
these metrics against other indicators will improve the reliability of
the Caution level for defining creeks that may be trending towards an
undesirable condition.</p>

<h3><a href="https://tbep-tech.github.io/tidalcreek-stats/docs/MCMC.pdf"

<p>This link provides code to replicate the monte carlo analysis used to
identify the “Investigate” criteria for the WQAF. The code is written in
Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS) software but should be easily
transferable to R software though results may differ slightly due to
differences in the random seed algorithms. The results defined by this
analysis are those currently used in the dashboard and as reported in
Wessel et al. 2021 which differ slightly from that initially reported in
Janicki and Mote (2016 and 2019) as the computer coding methods were
refined over time.</p>

<h3><a

<p>This pdf is an excerpt from the 2019 tidal creek study that describes
an evaluation of dilution of nutrient concentrations along the salinity
gradient. The analysis tested the conceptual model that dilution is
linear and found organic nitrogen to be in supply relative to the linear
dilution assumption while inorganic nitrogen was rapidly assimilated
along the salinity gradient. This has implications for developing
nutrient criteria for tidal creeks using conservative assumptions
regarding nutrients as well as the role of natural emergent vegetation
(e.g. mangroves) and decomposition of allochthonous material as a
natural source of organic nitrogen in addition to inputs from
anthropogenic sources.</p>

future tidal creek research including the need for additional methods to
characterize the role of benthic algal productivity, the role of
emergent wetland vegetation, and the case for urbanization resulting in
decreased productivity in these creeks.Hopefully, the dashboard tool and
water quality assessment framework provide a foundation from which to
better understand the role of physical and biological interactions with
observed water quality in these systems.</p>
