Respond with appropriate HTTP response codes

The API is responding consistently with 503s whenever I make it error out for validation. Makes it harder to hack when the response codes are wrong :)

could you give me a sample GET/POST request to the server that I could use to replicate the issue? (assuming that you were sending requests directly to the server here)

or if it could be reproduced via the UI, steps to do so.
