I found myself repeating this logic for a third time while fixing #6.
It's unfortunate that this exposes "advanced users" (those who are modifying this crate's code) to scary explicit lifetimes, but I can't think of an alternative that's any prettier, and this makes the rest of the systems easier to follow.
