Cisco IOS (Routers and Switches) Cheat Sheet

Cheat sheet for Cisco Networking Labs, and Cisco IOS. Can be used on: Cisco IOS and Microsoft Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10.

SWITCH/ROUTER

Connecting to a switch/router using console port

Setting up physical connection

  1. Connect a RJ-45 Ethernet cable to the port labelled "Console" on the (back of the) switch / (front of the) router.
  2. Connect the other end to the correct port on the "Patch Panel".
  3. Connect the ethernet end of the "Console Cable" to the port on the wall, serial end to the computer's COM (serial) port.
  4. [Optional] Connect "USB to DB9" adapter to the serial end of the "Console Cable".
  5. [Optional] Connect the USB end of the "USB to DB9" adapter to the computer.

Using PuTTY/TeraTerm to connect to a switch/router

  1. Open PuTTY/TeraTerm.
  2. Select "Serial" connection.
  3. Choose the correct "COM Port".
  4. Click on "Connect".
  5. If nothing shows up, hit ENTER a couple of times.
  6. Say no to the prompt.

Enabling port security

Entering the switchport port-security command sets the maximum MAC addresses to 1 and the violation action to shutdown. The switchport port-security maximum and switchport port-security violation commands can be used to change the default behavior.

You can use "sticky" parameter instead of the MAC_ADDRESS to enable dynamic learning.

Disabling HTTP server

Used for web interface/management, but it's not secure, so we disable it.

Setting a MOTD banner

Enabling/Disabling logging

To enable:

Configuring an interface

"no shut" command enables the interface, "shut" command disables the interface.

Replace "ip" with "ipv6" to set the IPv6 instead of IPv4.

Add "link-local" at the end (of IPv6 set command) to set Link-Local address.

If it doesn't work on 2960 Switch, take a look at Enabling support for IPv6 on 2960 Switch Database Manager.

Configure "vlan 99" to enable web interface.

Enabling/Disabling RIP routing

"router rip" to enable

"no router rip" to disable

"version VERSION" -> "version 2" to set the RIP version, don't specify to use default version, 1

Configuring "version 1" enables RIPv1 only, while configuring "no version" returns the router to the default setting of sending version 1 updates but listening for version 1 and version 2 updates.

R1(config)# router rip
R1(config-router)# version 2

Setting an interface to be passive (RIP)

By default, RIP updates are forwarded out all RIP-enabled interfaces. However, RIP updates really only need to be sent out interfaces that are connected to other RIP enabled routers.

Use this to stop routing updates out the specified interface. This process prevents unnecessary routing traffic on the LAN. However, the network that the specified interface belongs to is still advertised in routing updates that are sent out across other interfaces.

R1(config-router)# passive-interface INTERFACE_NAME INTERFACE_NO
R1(config-router)# passive-interface gigabitethernet 0/0

As an alternative, all interfaces can be made passive using the "passive-interface" default command.

R1(config-router)# passive-interface default

Interfaces that should not be passive can be re-enabled using the "no passive-interface" command.

R1(config-router)# no passive-interface INTERFACE_NAME INTERFACE_NO

Advertising networks (RIP)

Use this to enable RIP routing on a network.

An ip address, such as 192.168.1.32 with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, will be automatically registered as 192.168.1.0

R1(config-router)# network IP_ADDRESS
R1(config-router)# network 192.168.1.0

Enabling/Disabling Auto-Summarization (RIPv2 Only)

"auto-summary" to enable

"no auto-summary" to disable

R1(config-router)# no auto-summary

Viewing OSPF databases/tables

Adjacency Database - Neighbor Table

List of all neighbor routers to which a router has established bidirectional communication. This table is unique for each router.

show ip ospf neighbor
Link-State Database - Topology Table

Lists information about all other routers in the network. This database represents the network topology. All routers within an area have identical LSDB.

show ip ospf database
Forwarding Database - Routing Table

List of routes generated when an algorithm is run on the link-state database. The routing table of each router is unique and contains information on how and where to send packets to other routers.

show ip route

Setting up a static route

You can use just one, or both interface and ip as destination.

Replace "ip" with "ipv6" to set up IPv6 static route

R1(config)# ip route IP_ADDRESS SUBNET_MASK [INTERFACE_NAME INTERFACE_NO] [DESTINATION_IP_ADDRESS]

Setting up default route

In static routing, use "ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0"

Replace "ip" with "ipv6" to set up IPv6 default route.

In IPv6, "0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0" becomes "::/0"

R1(config)# ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 [INTERFACE_NAME INTERFACE_NO] [DESTINATION_IP_ADDRESS]

In dynamic routing, use "default-information originate". This instructs R1 to originate default information, by propagating the static default route in RIP updates.

Enabling IPv6 uni-cast routing

Router(config)# ipv6 unicast-routing

Enabling support for IPv6 on 2960 Switch Database Manager

Do this if the switch gives an error when you try to set IPv6 address in config mode.

You can view the number, and the types of errors using this command.

If there is the symbol "*" next to the route source identifier (C/L/R/S/D/O), it means that it was manually configured

Replace "ip" with "ipv6" to view IPv6 routing table.

Configuring IPv4/IPv6 address

  1. Open "Control Panel".
  2. Go to "Network and Internet" > "Network and Sharing Center" > ADAPTER_NAME > "Properties" > "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" / "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)" > "Properties".
  3. Select "Use the following IP address:".
  4. Type the IP, subnet mask/metric, [gateway].
  5. Press "OK".

Opening Command Prompt

  1. Press WIN + R.
  2. Type "cmd".
  3. Hit ENTER, or click "Run".
