How to build gdm-settings from source in Ubuntu based distro?

It is giving error

gtk| Dependency glib-2.0 found: NO found 2.64.6 but need: '>= 2.72.0' (cached)

I recommend you don't do that. I tried that a few months ago. Since gdm-settings requires the latest releases of software, it is hard to build on older systems (e.g. 20.04 or 22.04).

I will try to fix this at some point but I'm not sure when.

However, if do want to build from source on your Ubuntu installation, you can run meson wrap update-db command from inside the gdm-settings source directory. This command will fix the glib-2.0 found: NO error. But be warned, since you are on a (relatively) old system, you will run into more similar problems and you'll have to build a lot of software from source including wayland, gnome-desktop (the library, not the whole DE), and so on.

And also, libadwaita-devel is not available in ubuntu based distro.

The package name for LibAdwaita is libadwaita-1-devel. But installing it will not work since the version in Ubuntu repos will be old at this point anyway.

Builds fine for me (just not on 20.04 or 22.04, but later):

http://sid.ethz.ch/debian/gdm-settings/ (go for 3.1)

Even Debian unstable was not new enough, I had to add stuff from Debian experimental. (once the freeze is over, and
release done, June 10th 2023 (Debian 12), it'll get available for Debian unstable, and Debian testing, as well as Ubuntu 23.10)

Well, yes and no.

It is related to the warning in the sense that if you have installed all the dependencies on a relatively up-to-date distro, you won't see this issue.

But the issue itself is because GTK project removed gtk:demos build argument, but I didn't remove gtk:demos argument in the build script of GDM Settings because I didn't know that GTK had removed that argument.
