Can't unregister distro and clean WSL installation win11 #12695

Hello, I can't unregister my rancher desktop image (broken) and clean reinstall wsl

Repro Steps

Install rancher, uninstall and execute the following cmds:
wsl --unregister rancher-desktop-data

Expected Behavior

WSL is correctly uninstalled with no distro so I can reinstall it as blank

Actual Behavior

Can't clean install, I got the error reported

Diagnostic Logs

How to collect WSL logs

Download and execute collect-wsl-logs.ps1 in an administrative powershell prompt:

Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/WSL/master/diagnostics/collect-wsl-logs.ps1" -OutFile collect-wsl-logs.ps1
Set-ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Scope Process -Force
.\collect-wsl-logs.ps1

The script will output the path of the log file once done.

If this is a networking issue, please use collect-networking-logs.ps1, following the instructions here

Once completed please upload the output files to this Github issue.

Thank you for reporting this @Raffa50. It looks like something's going wrong in wslservice.

Could you follow 12) Collect wslservice time travel debugging traces

And capture a time travel debugging trace of wslservice.exe while you reproduce the issue ? This should help us understand what's happening there
