I have a working version of this, but it got complicated due to issues that led to me filing #77, so I will probably re-do it after that is resolved. Not that that should stop anyone else, but in the current code base adding an applicator with a completely new structure requires a lot of modifications that will get consolidated after #77 is fixed.
