See the attached file for an example system where this happens. It looks like it occurs when a material is specified.

I'm guessing I would need to allow the user to set a background refractive index to better identify the air gaps, but I'm not yet certain.

I confirmed that the problem only occurs when I specify materials, not refractive indexes.
