I have tried to use it for coastline improvement and the first attempts are quite encouraging:

http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/28464332

The workflow could be a little faster if there would be a special mode that

  • would create just plain untagged ways without any relations
  • won't insist on creating "closed ways" around the edges of the viewport

Currently my best idea to do coastline improvement with this tool is to let scanaerial create a new segment of the coast, delete a section of the old coast in the area and combine the way. Next I tag islands and cleanup the geometry manually.

An advantage of the (multi) polygons that they can easily be combined in JOSM: <Shift>+<J>.
sa_combine_1
sa_combine_2
Next you can search and delete redundant nodes: <Ctrl>+<F>, "type:node untagged -child", <Del>.
