Since April 2022 a software update turned all Hotspots capable of [Proof-of-Coverage](/iot/proof-of-coverage) activity into
"Light" Hotspots which no longer stored a copy of the Helium Blockchain locally. And after a further
migration in April 2023 to the Solana Blockchain, IoT Hotspots are Helium IoT Network coverage providers
that do not need to store any blockchain data.
In comparison to an IoT [Data Only Hotspot](/iot/data-only-hotspots), which only gets rewarded for
data transfer activity, Light Hotspots are still additionally eligible for Proof-of-Coverage rewards
as well as data transfer rewards.
