Add Briem fonts #5928
Comments
@EbenSorkin can you update us on Briem status in this issue? |
Requires build tooling development to onboard this family |
This is a long version of what Chris said with a few more details in case
that's useful:
I met with Felipe about this because I don't have the programming
background to build a single source that generates many repo.
I showed him the guidelines Python script I have, which works great but
does assume it is working in the Glyphs app rather than on it's own. So he
has to get it working independently.
We also discussed excising the join glyphs and the CALT OT code in the
non-joining versions.
I think Felipe might have more to say Mon or Tuesday.
I am keen to reuse the model to make the Git repos for 7 or so Australian
font families which need with some tweaks essentially the same treatment.

@felipesanches any updates on the progress here? We are looking into this family for Q4 and I'd like to understand if that seems feasible. |
The programming side of this was migrated to Simon and it seems (to me)
like he is close to having a solution. We had talked about making the
guidelines in manner that didn't assume use of Glyphs app and that was
minor sticking point. I think we might be able to say let's ship it using
Glyphs app to make the variants and we can cycle back and
remove dependency later. It sounds like maybe that would be a
preferred solution at this point. I spoke to Simon lat on Monday. I'll
check in and see if he is amenable to this. He may also be close to just
completing a non-dependant solution. Let's see what he says.
Similar problems and solutions are needed for both the Breim and the
Australian fonts. But that doesn't preclude distinctive solutions in the
short term.

What's the status here? |
There are new ccmp issues I have fixed today. I have one more check to make
and then Simon can have the source again.

@EbenSorkin, can you write me a description for the |
Status? |
I think what's here should be OK to use
https://github.com/SorkinType/Briem-Hand
But I can update it if I have overlooked something.

I've pushed a new PR. I think we need a designer bio/picture. |
Thanks @simoncozens, I'll review it and merge it! |
Luc Devroye has one here: http://luc.devroye.org/fonts-26324.html |
What would we do without Luc Devroye... Thanks @simoncozens! |
Luc won't last forever. I asked him how much longer he will maintain that
resource and he said not that much longer. I wonder what Dave thinks about
this.

I reached out to Briem on Jan 17 to discuss how we might wrap up the decisions / work necessary to land this update. Await a response. |
Font Project Git Repo URL:
(Possibly more families will end up as part of the project)
Super short description of the Font Family:
The famous icelandic type designer Briem has liberated his famous 'learn to write' fonts and Sorkin Type has been updating them to support more languages and other Google Fonts requirements, plus with help from DJR and Simon Cozens, make the joining work via OpenType shaping.
Requirements:
I understand that Google Fonts will publish only fonts that matches its requirements, and I can confirm the project meets them (by ticking the cases, or putting x between the square brackets in text mode):
Eben is still working on the project but getting close to done, so filing this issue to track in the onboarding queue.

The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
