This hands-on introduction to the command line interface is part 1 of a four-part series called Building Your Programming Toolbox.

The workshop is for those beginning their exploration of command-line programming, including anyone seeking to refresh their skills. Command line interface (CLI) is a quick and efficient way to perform computing tasks. A few topics include navigating the directory structure, commonly used commands, working with files and directories, and more. For this workshop, you’ll need access to Bash Shell. If you use MacOS or Linux, you should have Bash already installed. For those on Windows OS, you may need to install a bash shell. Git Bash installation is one option for installing Bash Shell.

Data Storytelling

When working with data, the ways in which we communicate about or discusss anlysis is as important as the act of research iteself. A large part of being able to effectively use data is to understand what stories are contained within data sets, and what infomration may play a key role in anlysis. In this workshop, we will go over strategies to develop research questions tied to specific data sets, identify core elements of data that may lead to successful and fruitful anlysis, as well as how to them use both data and results from anlysis to communicate ideas to acedemic and public audiences.

Data Visualization Best Practices

Data visualization, or the techniques used to visually display or communicate data, is an obvious output of our research or data analysis. Being able to effectively communicate your data to an audience is a necessary part of any project. How to harness visualization tools to tell a story will be presented in this short workshop. We will discuss how different types of graphs and charts are perceived and how they can be used to answer different questions, as well as what aspects of graphs make for effective storytelling.

In the final part of the 3-part workshop series, "Introduction to Python for Data Science," we offer an overview of Python fundamentals for performing iterative tasks with for loops and conditional tasks using logic and if statements. We will then show how to apply these programming techniques to analyze and visualize multiple tabular datasets with Pandas. The content covered in this workshop will be a continuation of the content covered in part 1, "Introduction to Basic Programming with Data" and part 2, "Plotting and Analyzing Tabular Datasets". We highly encourage attending both part 1 and 2 of the series before this workshop, especially for learners that are new to the Python programming language.

Text Mining with TDM Studio Workbench: An Introduction

In this 1-hour workshop, TDM Studio experts will provide an overview of what TDM Studio is and how to get started with TDM Studio Workbench for your research project. You will have the opportunity to create a dataset related to your research topic and to begin analyzing that dataset within TDM Studio. We will use and run sample Jupyter Notebooks, written in Python, to look at word counts and word co-occurrences in your project dataset. No coding experience is needed for the workshop, and by the end of the workshop you will have: 1) Familiarity with using TDM Studio as well as 2) Starting, baseline results for a text analysis project. Which politicians have the most newspaper presence? Does this vary by specific newspaper titles? Which politicians co-occur together most frequently?

Scoping reviews are a popular research synthesis method for systematically describing the existing literature on a topic. They are more reproducible and comprehensive than a traditional literature review and can help us to understand the scope of research in an area, identify existing gaps, and surface trends and key concepts.
Python for Harvesting Data on the Web

This is an intermediate-to-advanced level Python workshop that describes ways to approach common data wrangling from the web for research needs. We will focus on obtaining open data sources through HTTP requests and then demonstrate how to access larger sources of data via APIs. Then we will show how to turn the retrieved data into more useful objects like data frames to do basic manipulations and analysis. This workshop is only recommended for Python users with familiarity in Pandas, Numpy, core Python objects (lists, dictionaries, strings, numbers), file types like JSON and CSV, and comfort using Jupyter Notebooks.

Gale Digital Scholar Lab: Hands-On Overview Training for CMU

This session provides participants with the ability to familiarize themselves with Gale Digital Scholar Lab’s three sections – Build, Clean, Analyze. The webinar covers performing search queries with Gale primary source content, curating datasets, using the six built-in analysis tools, and reviewing results.
