Describe the Bug

Installed 2.6.0 using deb package, updated to 2.6.1.1. Tried to sign into Apple "with Apple". I get the popup and successfully sign in using my Apple ID. When I close the popup, I see an "authentication error" popup (no additional info). I've also tried installing the flatpak version and got the exact same issue.

I expect to be able to sign into apple.

Hello, could you please answer the following to help us work out why you are experiencing this issue.

  1. Do you have a full Apple Music subscription?
  2. What happened when you tried logging into Apple Music web?
  3. Is authentication error popup in the bottom right, as a toast notification, or apart of the login window?
  4. When you signed in, did you use security key, AppleID and password, or attempt to use passkey?

Now I'm wondering what you mean by "full Apple Music subscription". I have an iMac with MacOS and I use Apple Music to play and purchase music all the time. But I have noticed that if I log into the Apple Music website with my Apple ID, I don't see any of my purchased music. Maybe if you're not on MacOS you have to buy something more??

Here's some screenshots of logging what I see when logging in:

When I say full Apple Music subscription I mean not a trial since a lot our users mistaken this.

However, in your case it looks like you do not have a subscription. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate for iTunes Store purchases since our app is not built with this in mind, nor can we access the API for that.

The Music app on macOS and the iTunes app on windows are created with the older iTunes API which uses the older music purchase-based model, where all the music currently operates through the subscription model. For you to be able to use Cider you will need to purchase an Apple Music subscription. We do state this on the purchase page, so I'm sorry if you have mistaken this.

I was definitely confused by this since I've owned Macs for years and we use Apple Music on our Mac for all of our music, both local and purchased through the Apple Store. Since I've always used iTunes/Apple Music on MacOS, I've never even heard of a "subscription", I guess I thought it was something related to not having an Apple ID and already using Apple Music on a Mac. I've had iPods, but always synced music to them through the desktop apps. Guess I was just behind the times. Digging around, it looks like Cider is fully cloud-based and you can't even use it to play local music on your computer.

Is there a way to get my $3.49 back? If not, I guess buyer beware, and that's OK.

Unfortunately, as this is a clearer documented thing on all our purchase pages, a refund will most likely not be given. I'm sorry about the confusion and hope you can find a use for the app in the future.
