- Clone the unreal engine source repo https://github.com/EpicGames/UnrealEngine
git clone --depth 1 --branch 5.3.2-release https://github.com/EpicGames/UnrealEngine.git
- Move to the cloned location and run
./Setup.sh
./GenerateProjectFiles.sh
- Build the shader compiler The guide states that you need xcode for this but since I don't like xcode (especially because it hogs 70GB of my available 32GB ram o.O) we use commandline instead
# mac
xcodebuild -workspace UE5\ \(Mac\).xcworkspace -scheme ShaderCompileWorker build
# linux
make ShaderCompileWorker
- Build the engine
# mac
xcodebuild -workspace UE5\ \(Mac\).xcworkspace -scheme UnrealEditor build #takes a while
# linux
make UnrealEditor
- Place projet inside the root of the
./Engine
folder. And you are good to go.
There are two ways to get a project to compile with the new engine.
You can convert previous projects through Engine/Binaries/Mac/unrealEditor
.
- Open
Engine/Binaries/Mac/unrealEditor
- Click the project you want to open in the new engine
- Ignore all the errors when you try to open the project.
- Now you can
- Open with xcode and build
- Generate project files and build with
xcodebuild
If you copy your project to the same directory as Engine
e.g. the root of the source directory.
cd
into the newly created project directory- Generate project files including option (maybe with
--Engine
option) - Now you can
- Open with xcode and build
- Generate project files and build with
xcodebuild
- Generate project files and build make

Building the source engine skips building a backend daemon for the bridge. So the following needs to be copied from a real engine release.
cp -r /Users/Shared/Epic Games/UE_<version>/Engine/Plugins/Bridge/ThirdParty/Mac/node-bifrost.app\
~/UnrealEngine/Engine/Plugins/Bridge/ThirdParty/Mac/node-bifrost.app
If the source is built but the bridge is still not working it is probably because the signatures are wrong for the app. This can be solved by adding an certificate to the keychain unreal-cert
(much like what is done for yabai) and run this command
codesign -fs 'unreal-cert' ~/UnrealEngine/Engine/Plugins/Bridge/ThirdParty/Mac/node-bifrost.app/Contents/Frameworks/*framework
