spotify-snapshot

Easily snapshot (and schedule repeated snapshots of) the state of your Spotify library / playlists / etc, and store it in version control.

Why?

• Most important: If Spotify ever disappears or has a mass dataloss event, you'll have a current backup of your music library.
• Less important: You can track your Spotify world as it evolves over time (and use git tooling to analyze it).

Warning

This tool is limited by the Spotify API and spotipy. For example, it can not access "Spotify Wrapped" playlists, or playlists generated for you by Spotify.

Quickstart

$ git clone git@github.com:alichtman/spotify-snapshot.git
$ cd spotify-snapshot
$ pipx install .
$ spotify_snapshot --install

When playlists are deleted from Spotify, they are removed from the playlists directory, and the playlists.tsv file is updated to reflect the deletion.

Configuration

Spotify API Setup

In order to use this tool, you'll need to set up a Spotify developer app and copy the client ID and client secret to your environment.

1. Create a Spotify app at https://developer.spotify.com/dashboard/applications
2. Set the callback URL to http://localhost:8000/callback
3. Select the "Web API" checkbox
4. Copy the client ID and client secret
5. Set them as environment variables in your shell profile:

export SPOTIFY_BACKUP_CLIENT_ID=<your-client-id>
export SPOTIFY_BACKUP_CLIENT_SECRET=<your-client-secret>

Configuration File

The tool uses a TOML configuration file located at $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/spotify-snapshot.toml (typically ~/.config/spotify-snapshot.toml). On first run, you'll be guided through a flow to create this file.

Automated Backups

You can set up automatic backups that run every x hours using the built-in cronjob integration:
