Brief

Sixty Dome Mosque (Shat Gambuj Masjid) meaning a mosque with 60 domes, was built in 1449. Because of the mosque has 77 squade domes, usually it is called as Sixty Dome Mosque. The Mosque is located about three miles west of the present Bagerhat town of Bangladesh. There is a museum inside in the mosque area. Tourists have to pay a small entrance fee of BDT 50 to visit the mosque. The museum next to the mosque is open from 9am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm. It has the many pillared interior that constitutes the real attraction. Suggestive of the great Mughal palaces of the period, and even of some of the great religious buildings of Europe, the superb pillars and the light they admit and the shadows they cast make the atmosphere of sanctity and durability. The Mosque is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The 'Sixty Dome' Mosque has walls of unusually thick, tapered brick in the Tughlaq style and a hut-shaped roofline that anticipates later styles. The length of the mosque is 160 feet and width is 108 feet. There are 77 low domes arranged in seven rows of eleven, and one dome on each corner, bringing the total to 81 domes. There are four towers. Two of four towers were used to call azaan. The interior is divided into many aisles and bays by slender columns, which culminate in numerous arches that support the roof.

The mosque has 77 squat domes with 7 four-sided pitched Bengali domes in the middle row.The vast prayer hall, although provided with 11 arched doorways on east and 7 each on north and south for ventilation and light, presents a dark and somber appearance inside. It is divided into 7 longitudinal aisles and 11 deep bays by a forest of 60 slender stone columns, from which springs rows of endless arches, supporting the domes. Six feet thick, slightly tapering walls and hollow and round, almost detached corner towers, resembling the bastions of fortress, each capped by small rounded cupolas, recall the Tughlaq architecture of Delhi. The mosque represents wonderful archeological beauty which was the signature in the 15th century.

The Shat Gombuj Mosque has existed for nearly for 6 centuries. It is also referred to as sixty Dome Mosque. It is one of the largest historical mosques in the Bangladesh. People in Indian subcontinent praise it for architectural beauty. Khan Jahan Ali built the Shat Gombuj Mosque. The walls are unusually thick, made from tapered brick. 77 low domes are located inside and one dome on every corner

Many aisles serve as divisions in its interior. Most of its parts were decorated by terracotta. The structure looks like a fortress, three smaller mosques can be found near it. They are Bibi Begni's Mosque, which is found on its western side; the Chunakhola Mosque, located half a mile northwest of Bibi Begni's Mosque; and the Singar Mosque, which is a single-domed mosque like the Chunakhola, located nearly half a mile southeast of Shat Gombuj Mosque.

How to go

It is located in Bagerghat district of Khulna divison. A cycle-rickshaw from the bus stand to the Shat Gombuj Mosque should run around Tk 10. Unless you're in a hurry, you may want to just walk to the sights from the bus stand. Head west along the main road, a fairly nice walk save for the speedy honking buses. The first sight you'll come to is the dargah; start asking around for it after about 5km or so. Shat Gombuj mosque is another 2 km or so west along the main road from the dargah turn off.

Things to do

With Shat Gumbuj Mosque, you can see some other smaller mosques. These are Bibi Begni's Mosque, about 500m behind Shat Gombuj mosque and across a large pond, which has some interesting floral motifs; the bulbous Chunakhola Mosque, in a paddy field about 500m behind Bibi Begni's; and Singar Mosque, across the highway from Shat Gombuj mosque.

Eating Facilities

If you are hungry, you may search for restaurants or fast food shops nearby. You may also carry your own food.

Travel Tips

There isn't much to buy here aside from some prayer beads and other little trinkets near the dargah.
