Automatic update check at application start

Whenever a user starts or goes back to the app, it queries the web to see if there's updates since the last sync and offers to update the data.

Do you envision this working differently than setting Sync Mode to On Startup (Always)?

Oh... Only slightly. Instead of it Always syncing on startup, it would
only sync if there have been changes on the website. But, this option is
good enough for the first release.
