Describe the bug
Upon selecting "Desktop" for my host, the app crashes and returns to the xbox dashboard

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Click on the host
  2. Click "Desktop"
  3. App crashes

Expected behavior
Desktop connection is made

Screenshots or Videos
If applicable, add screenshots or video recordings to help explain your problem.

** Logs **
Cant get to the client

Guest Information:

  • Xbox Series X
  • TV Resolution: 1080p

Host Information

  • Operating System: Windows
  • Host Software: Sunshine
  • Monitor Resolutions: 1080p
  • Refresh Rate: 120hz (changing to 60hz didnt fix the problem)

Additional context
My moonlight client on my macbook works, and this client worked literally right before the update. When I go to settings, I get a popup that says "Windows.Foundation.IReference`1<Windows.Foundation.HResult>. My sunshine version is v2025.122.141614. Pressing start on the host and selecting "Host Settings" also crashes the app. Removing and adding the host back does not fix the problem. There are NO logs in sunshine from these failed attempts.

Likely related to my problem. Do you have 50/24Hz mode enabled on your Xbox video display settings? If not, turn them on. You'll probably then be able to go into the settings, but if you leave them on it'll jam the refresh rate in Moonlight to 24Hz.

Nope, toggling the settings doesn't do anything. In that vein, I've tried doing things like turning the resolution to 1080p, 4k, changing the refresh rate from 120hz to 60hz (which I don't think ever worked despite claims to the contrary), and still the same issue.

EDIT: Messing around with the settings, and now I can at least get into the stream. But the FPS is locked to 24hz. So I think it's related to my xbox video settings, which are:

  1. Allow 50/24hz: checked
  2. Variable Refresh Rate: Always On
  3. Allow YCC: Checked
  4. Allow 4k: Checked
  5. Allow HDR10: Checked
  6. Auto HDR: Unchecked

PRETTY sure I had these settings to begin with, but toggling them seemed to "unstuck" moonlight. But like the other commenter, certain combinations of resolution lock my refresh options to 23.9hz. Certain display/stream resolutions also seemingly/randomly disappear and reappear; sometimes I can select multiple display resolutions, and sometimes I can only select one.

Had the same issue after an automatic update of Moonlight to the latest version, just check Stream/Host resolution (on host settings through the Moonlight app) and adjust to your needs.

This fixed the issue for me.
