We would like to add four maps that are based on in-situ ecosystem carbon flux and direct fire emission estimates (from combustion) that have been upscaled to the Arctic-boreal region with machine learning and remote sensing and meteorology data.

These maps are: 1. Annual average terrestrial ecosystem CO2 balance (i.e. NEE, net ecosystem exchange that considers plant carbon uptake and plant and soil CO2 emissions) over 2002-2020. 2. Annual average terrestrial CO2 balance (direct fire CO2 emissions added to map 2, i.e. NEE+fire). 3. Temporal trends in annual NEE over 2002-2020. 4. Temporal trends in annual NEE+fire over 2002-2020.

The projection of these rasters is North Pole Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area Projection and the pixel resolution is 1 x 1 km. The unit is g C m-2 yr-1. In the average maps, negative means a net ecosystem CO2 sink (i.e. terrestrial ecosystem is taking up more CO2 from the atmosphere than releasing it), positive means CO2 source. In the trend maps, negative means increasing net CO2 uptake, and positive means increasing net CO2 losses.

The NEE maps are produced entirely by us in a Virkkala et al. 2024 manuscript that is currently in review (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.02.09.579581v1), but for the gridded fire data, we use the (https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/15/8411/2022/). The combined NEE+fire map was produced as part of our Virkkala et al. 2024 manuscript too.

Our maps are now for the Arctic-boreal region (i.e include areas in southern Finland, Sweden, and Canada that are not part of the permafrost domain). We can crop the maps to the permafrost region alone. Would you like us to do that?

A Google Drive link with examples of the four products will soon follow...

@annvirkk Thank you so much for documenting your dataset here and offering to crop the maps to the permafrost region. I do not think that cropping it will be necessary, so let's wait until I get a sample of the dataset and can try mapping it before we made any modifications.

Anna has passed on a sample tif file and it is privately stored on Datateam at: /var/data/submission/carbon_flux_woodwell/ with a README
