Team − communication
The internal communications within Naomod are managed using the Matrix open protocol.
When you arrive in the team, please join the Naomod public Matrix room: #naomodpublic:tedomum.net
. Say hi, and from there, one permanent member of NaoMod will add you to the private full NaoMod matrix space, and you will be able to join all our rooms.
- If you already have a Matrix account, this should be easy for you.
- If you do not have a Matrix account, read first the text below!
Compared to other instant messaging solutions (such as Slack, Discord or Mattermost), one novel aspect of the Matrix protocol is that it is fully decentralized: there are many Matrix providers — called Matrix homeservers — available over the internet, and people using different homeservers can communicate together seemlessly — exactly the same as email, which allows someone using the @univ-nantes.fr
email provider to communicate with someone using the @imt-atlantique.fr
or @gmail.com
email provider.
Since our employers (Nantes Université or IMT-A) do not provide Matrix homeservers for us to use, NaoMod members will each have to create an account on some existing Matrix homeserver available over the Internet. There is a large number of existing homeservers, from many different countries/organizations.
For instance:
- The biggest Matrix homeserver is the one hosted by the Matrix foundation, and is simply named "matrix.org". It works well, even though it is currently a little overloaded with people. You can use it if you don't want to think too much about it, it should work fine.
- Among permanent members, most of us chose to use the Matrix homeserver of TeDomum, a French non-profit. If you wish to do the same, you have to first create an account on their SSO.
- You can also pick any homeserver you prefer, see for instance this list.
Once you have chosen a Matrix homeserver, you need to use a Matrix client (playing the same role as an email client in the case of email). The "flagship" Matrix client is called Element, and is available in several flavors (web, desktop, mobile). We are all using Element among permanent members currently, but you can look at this page if you are curious about other alternative matrix clients
For example, you can start Element in a web browser by going at this address. Then, when you sign in or when you create an account, you have to specify the Matrix homeserver you are using (same as typing the IMAP server of your email provider in an email client). For example if using the "matrix.org" homeserver, you can type https://matrix.org/
, or if you are using TeDomum, you can type https://tedomum.net/
.
