What will happen in your session?

Machine learning (ML) has become increasingly popular. Algorithms and big data assume a central role in our lives, from healthcare, over education, to energy systems. However, ML is mostly taught isolated from other disciplines. In this session we will discuss beneficial applications of ML while evaluating the negative consequences of its isolation. After a brief introduction, we will form subgroups with the participants. Each group will discuss a different problem that could be solved with ML and propose a potential framework for it. Afterwards, groups will exchange frameworks and will critically evaluate potential ethical issues of the frameworks developed by their peers (e.g. biases, sharing of sensitive data, etc.), and will propose solutions to them.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

Participants will gain basic knowledge about how machine learning is applied in real life settings and how to identify problems that can be solved by it. Furthermore, participants will learn how to think about the broader societal and ethical implications that new machine learning applications induce. Moreover, through a shared discussion, participants will get an idea why diverse teams are important in identifying such shortcomings.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Projector, paper, pens, post-it notes.

@elpinki thanks (again!) for the submission! If you want (but you don't have to), feel free you see if you want to work our zone theme into your session https://github.com/KadeMorton/Xenshana

Just to flag this one @MozillaFestival/2018-decentralisation-wranglers, @elpiniki has also been accepted in Youth Zone for #684
So we need to make sure we don't overlap (hence our added label). Lets make sure we chat once scheduling is underway about this one!
