The security of the exam environment is based on the assumption that the normal user doesn't know the user password that is set by the admin (via lernstickWelcome).
This leads to strange situations when e.g. the user locks the desktop and only IT staff is able to unlock it again...
A clean separation of user accounts (root and user) would probably make things a little bit more complicated but prevents strange situations like the one given above.

At the moment "locking" in the exam environment is only possible by logging off or using hardware-sleep via keyboard
