Opening a pdf inside eclipse with pdf4eclipse on a macbook pro with retina display gives
a very poor preview of the document (text is hard to see). The document looks very nice
using other external pdf viewers such as skim or preview. Is there a way to increase the resolution of the pdf preview inside eclipse?

I'm using an external viewer (Apple Preview actually) too, but it is a shame that pdf4eclipse is not updated to work for retina display.
