North East Frontier Railway

The Northeast Frontier Railway (abbreviated NFR) is one of the 19 railway zones of the Indian Railways. It is headquartered in Maligaon, Guwahati in the state of Assam, and responsible for operation and expansion of rail network all across Northeastern states and some districts of eastern Bihar and northern West Bengal. The area of Northeast Frontier Railway operations is characterized by exceptional beauty and at the same time by some of the most arduous terrain. This difficult terrain limits the rail network expansion, and the only state with a decent rail network is Assam. The network is not broad gauge in many parts and the rail lines are antiquated with speeds at some sections being limited to a maximum of 30 km/h (19 mph). Before the Saraighat Bridge was constructed, passengers had to get down on the Amingaon side of the Brahmaputra and take a ferry across to Pandu Junction from where they could resume their journey. The majority of the tracks have been converted to BG and electrification is in process starting from Katihar till Guwahati.

Darjiling Himalayan Railways

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is maintained and governed under the responsibility of Katihar division. It ascends 6,850 feet (2,090 m) from New Jalpaiguri; the climb begins at Sukna, continues uninterruptedly to Ghum (7,407 ft or 2,258 m) and descends the final 5 miles (8.0 km) to Darjeeling. After independence, India's partition resulted in the isolation of the Northeast region. Consequently, the DHR was merged into Assam Railways, it was closed for the construction of the Assam–Bengal link line and one of its extension lines to Kishanganj was converted to metre gauge. DHR's other extension line to Kalimpong was washed away due to floods. On reopening, the DHR was merged with North Eastern Railway in 1952 and later into Northeast Frontier Railway in 1958.

Hyderabad Multi Model Transport System

The Hyderabad Multi-Modal Transport System, commonly abbreviated MMTS, is a suburban rail system in Hyderabad, India.[3] A joint venture of the government of Telangana and the South Central Railway, it is operated by the latter. The 50-kilometre (31 mi) system operates on three main routes: Falaknuma–Lingampalli, Hyderabad–Falaknuma and Hyderabad–Lingampalli. The first phase was opened to the public on 9 August 2003 by Deputy Prime Minister of India L.K. Advani.[4] The second phase was opened by N.Chandrababu Naidu, chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.[5][6] The system has three lines, with total length of 44 kilometres (27 mi). In May, 2010, Indian Railways decided to take over the 104-kilometre (65 mi) Phase II project at an estimated cost of ₹ 641 crore. The Railway Board cleared the second phase after the state government agreed to fund two-thirds of the cost, and it is under construction.

Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal - World Class Terminal Station

The new station was constructed at a cost of ₹314 crores. The station has VIP lounges, food courts, escalators and air conditioning waiting rooms. According to railways officials It was first air-conditioned railway terminal in South India. It was also first green field project for Indian railways to construct a world class terminal.[2] Work was completed in the early 2021, but there is more than 18 months delay in opening of railway station. Railway officials cited the COVID-19 pandemic and lack of connectivity as the main reasons for delay, but inside sources claimed the delay was to allow the prime minister to open the station. Commercial operations began on 6 June 2022 with Ernakulam Tri-Weekly Express.

Southern Railways

The Southern Railway (abbreviated SR), headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 19 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 19 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern of India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002 and 2003, Southern Railway has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.[2] The trains operated by the southern railway are rated the cleanest as well as cleanly maintained trains of the Indian Railways. It covers the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and small portions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. More than 50 crore passengers travel on the network every year. Andaman and Nicobar areas also to be covered under the new railway project sanctioned for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Konkan Railways

The Konkan Railway (abbreviated KR) is one of the 19 railway zones in India with its headquarters at CBD Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The first passenger train ran on Konkan railway tracks on 20 March 1993, between Udupi and Mangalore. During its initial years of operation in the mountainous Konkan region, a number of accidents prompted Konkan Railway to implement new technology. Anti-collision devices, the Sky Bus and roll-on/roll-off are several of the railway's innovations.[1] The 756.25 km (469.91 mi) long railway line connects the states of Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The first train on the completed track was sent off on 26 January 1998. The terrain and weather of the Konkan region have caused problems for the railway.

Improvements

According to a study by the railway, track doubling is possible on about 324-kilometre (201 mi) which runs on the plains. Several stretches on the 756.25-kilometre (469.91 mi) line can be converted to double track, such as the 47-kilometre (29 mi) line from Roha to Veer, which is now doubled. The 63-kilometre (39 mi) stretch between Udupi and Mangalore is another candidate. The 88-kilometre (55 mi) track from Madure to Vaibhavwadi Road is entirely flat terrain and can easily be converted into Double Track. The 75.75-kilometre (47.07 mi) track from Panvel Junction to Roha has been doubled.

The foundation stone laying for electrification of the Konkan railway line was done in November 2015. The entire 741 kilometer route stretching from Roha, Maharashtra to Thokur, Karnataka has been electrified in March 2022. The railway was scheduled to have new crossing stations at Indapur, Goregaon Road, Sape Wamne, Kalambani Budruk, Kadavai, Veravali, Kharepatan Road, Achirne, Mirjan and Innanje by December 2019. Most of these stations are operational now.
